6 Money Mindset Exercises to Help You Stay Focused on Your Goals

So have you ever tried a money mindset exercise?

Money mindset exercises can help you stay focused on your financial goals and actually achieve them.

In today’s post, we’re going to talk about how to keep yourself on track and motivated by leveraging money mindset exercises.

What Are Money Mindset Exercises?

These exercises are things you do to change the way you think and feel about money and wealth.

Why does this matter?

  • The way you think about money impacts your ability to build wealth.
  • The way you feel about money affects how you take action.

I like to look at these exercises as abundance mindset exercises. They’re not “woo woo.” They simply help you:

  • Think about the way you relate to money
  • Examine your beliefs about money
  • Adjust negative beliefs that may be holding you back

And what’s great is that these exercises allow us to look at money objectively without becoming too emotional about it.

1. Look to the Past

A lot of our money beliefs come from:

  • The way we were raised
  • Things we were told when we were little
  • Things we were told when we made mistakes

👉 Write down your current money beliefs.

Then ask yourself:

  • Which beliefs don’t align with me anymore?
  • Which beliefs do I want to keep?

Example: A common belief is “it’s difficult to build wealth.” Yes, saving and reducing debt takes effort, but why does it have to be difficult for you?

Maybe you:

  • Have a job you love that pays well
  • Are already good at saving and side hustling

You’re already on the path to building wealth. So why hold on to the belief that wealth is “too hard”?

2. Examine Your Current Financial Situation

Think about where you are right now and where you want to go.

  • If you’ve been avoiding looking at your statements, now’s the time.
  • Write down your balances.
  • Reflect on your spending and bills.

This isn’t to make you feel guilty, it’s just to help you gain clarity.

Think of it like your car navigation system: you need to know your current location before you can map your route.

👉 Start a spending journal for 14–30 days. Note:

  • Where you spend
  • How you feel when you spend
  • Which expenses are non-essential

Then ask yourself:

  • How do my money beliefs tie into this?
  • What do I want to change?

3. Practice Self-Compassion

Once you’ve looked at your past and your current situation, it’s time to be kind to yourself.

  • Forgive yourself for past mistakes.
  • Stop judging yourself.
  • Don’t allow others to judge you.

Take the lessons, leverage what you’ve learned, and move forward.

We’re not perfect. We’re all trying to do better. Self-compassion makes it easier to grow.

4. Be Grounded in Gratitude

Gratitude is powerful. Count your blessings daily, even the smallest things.

When you focus on gratitude, you:

  • Stay appreciative of what you have
  • Stay content
  • Maintain a positive outlook instead of focusing on what you lack

5. Make a List: If Money Were No Object

Ask yourself: If money were no object, what would I do?

  • Write down everything based on your values and your “why.”
  • Then turn that list into financial goals.

For example:

  • In 3 days → something small you can do now
  • In 3 weeks → something short term
  • In 3 months → something medium term
  • In 3 years → something long term

This helps you see what’s actually possible and keeps you motivated.

6. Keep Showing Up for Yourself

Be intentional about supporting your abundant money mindset.

This means:

  • Surrounding yourself with people who inspire you
  • Being mindful of what you consume (books, shows, podcasts, etc.)
  • Learning and improving your personal finance knowledge
  • Spending quiet time in prayer, meditation, or reflection
  • Reviewing your goals often

There’s no one way to “show up.” Some days it might be affirmations, another day it might be a podcast, another day spending time with a mentor. The key is consistency, don’t give up.

Finally

Changing the way you think about money is only for the better.

These exercises can help you:

  • Improve your finances
  • Achieve your goals
  • Feel empowered instead of held back by old beliefs

And finally — do something every day. Create a daily practice around improving your money mindset.
